Linking Lives Befriending Service

As we approach our third birthday, our volunteer befrienders are now visiting eleven people on a regular basis. Our clients vary in age but are often elderly. Some people just want someone to talk with, some like to go out for coffee or to look around shops and garden centres. The client and the befriender decide between them what they would like to do and how often they want to do it.  We have all the policies and procedures in place and support from the coordinator and her deputy to make this service the best one possible.

From time to time, we hold social events for the Link clients and those who are on our waiting list. The last one, just before Christmas, was afternoon tea with singing from the Gillingham Community Choir. The mayor came along to support us and a good time was had by all.

Befriending lonely people is a brilliant thing to do and very rewarding. One lady has phoned me on more than one occasion to thank me for introducing her to such a perfect befriender.  It also works the other way as volunteers benefit too.  One newly matched befriender said she wakes up excited every Monday morning because that is the day she goes to visit her lady.

We always need more befrienders and at the moment have ten folk on the waiting list. Download a volunteer pack, phone 07437 312166 or phone Carol for more information if you think this might be for you.
