When Joshua reached the shores of the Jordan river, with the land promised to the Israelites tantalisingly close over on the other side, he didn't just blunder in on his own. He consulted God first, who gave instructions for various things to be done beforehand, not least of which was how to cross the river - in full flood - safely. God also wanted His people to be 'set apart' and to remember how He had helped them.
